Brief History:  Whereas tax records show that the Victorian was built in 1910, the San Francisco Directory lists occupant Carson MacDonald, Dentist, in 1890, meaning that the home may have been built close to when Alta Plaza was transformed from an unsightly quarry to a scenic park. (Anecdotal evidence places the home’s construction closer to 1850.)  This large plot of land had been reserved in 1855 specifically to be made into a park, but it wasn’t until the protests and petitions of the Pacific Heights residents were heeded in in the early 1890s that the park development finally began. According to Gables and Fables, Scott Street was already built up by 1885, and it was the neighborhood homeowners who hired designer R. Ulrich in 1890 (without City Hall’s approval) to begin designing the park. Finally, in 1890-1892, with the necessary funds from City Hall, the land was converted, and the terraced park with its broad stairs that we still know today was created. Early photos depict the same sweeping views that can be found today at the top of the park, and some even show couples enjoying a sunny reprise on a park bench with the nearby Washington-Jackson cable car – a line which no longer runs – in the background. Alta Plaza also became the site of one of many refugee camps after the 1906 earthquake that ravaged the city, and one photo shows the view of the blazing fires from the safety of the Pacific Heights park.   Today, Alta Plaza Park which contains a children’s playground, a large lawn area, two full tennis courts plus a multipurpose basketball/tennis court. There are plenty of paved walking trails, benches, and views of the City. There is a kids' paly area that contains three different play structures, a sand lot, benches, slides and seven swings. The off-leash dog area is on the east side of the park. Wheelchair access is at Scott and Jackson Streets.  Improvements are again in process.
